Foretelling + Forthtelling
This activation helps people learn to differentiate between two different types of prophecy: foretelling and forthtelling. These two are different and learning how to flow in each can be helpful in taking your ability to prophesy to the next level.
Foretelling
Foretelling is where we observe something by the spirit and share with the person. You may be seeing where they’re at, what God’s heart is for them at the time, their future or something else, but the main thrust is perceiving something in the Spirit. As such the delivery is primarily aimed at sharing with the person what you’re seeing.
Forthtelling
Forthtelling is where we speak something into being prophetically. It releases and creates a reality in the spirit realm and as such it is aimed more at the spiritual realm and how it interacts with the person than directly to the person.
To practice the activity, have the students break up into groups or partners and get prophetic words for each other. When they do:
- Identify whether this is a foretelling or a forthtelling prophetic word.
- Speak the word out and deliver it as it is appropriate given what type of prophetic word it is.
Prophetic word can switch back and forth between types and that’s okay, just make sure that whichever type of prophetic word you’re sharing at the time you’re delivering it appropriately.
I’ve found that people tend to naturally gravitate towards delivering all words in a foretelling method. As they learn to identify and deliver forthtelling words appropriately there is often a breakthrough in prophecy (much like there is a breakthrough in healing when people begin to pray prayers of command for healing).
